The Complete Guide to FDA Nutrition Label Printing Requirements

July 29, 2026 by wp16023

FDA nutrition label printing requirements include specific fonts, formats, allergen declarations, and serving size rules. This guide covers the updated format and common compliance mistakes food producers must avoid.

The FDA’s Nutrition Facts panel is one of the most heavily regulated pieces of printing in the consumer product world. Every font size, line weight, and data point is specified. Getting it wrong can delay a product launch, trigger a recall, or result in a warning letter. Getting it right starts with understanding what the FDA actually requires.

The Updated Nutrition Facts Format

The FDA’s updated Nutrition Facts label format, which became mandatory for most manufacturers in January 2020 (with small manufacturers receiving an extension to January 2021), introduced several significant changes from the previous format. Serving sizes were updated to reflect amounts people actually eat. Calories are now displayed in a larger, bolder font. “Added Sugars” appears as a separate line item with a Daily Value percentage. Vitamin D and potassium are now required declarations, while vitamins A and C are voluntary.

These formatting requirements are precise. The “Nutrition Facts” header must appear in a specific weight and size. Hairline rules separate sections. The percent Daily Value column aligns right. Footnotes use specific language. A quality custom label printing company experienced in food labeling understands these specifications at a technical level and can produce compliant panels that are also visually integrated with your overall label design.

Minimum Font Sizes and Label Space Calculations

One of the biggest challenges in FDA nutrition label printing is fitting required content into the available label space — especially on small packages. The FDA specifies minimum type sizes for different elements of the Nutrition Facts panel, and these minimums change based on the total package size. Packages with less than 12 square inches of available label space qualify for a condensed format. Very small packages (under 12 square inches total surface area) may qualify for additional exemptions.

For artisan food producers creating custom die-cut labels in non-standard shapes, calculating available label space requires careful measurement. The nutrition panel must fit within the information panel without crowding, and the type must remain legible against the background color — the FDA requires sufficient contrast for readability, generally interpreted as dark text on a white or light background within the nutrition facts box.

Ingredient Statements and Allergen Declarations

Beyond the Nutrition Facts panel, FDA labeling requires an ingredient statement listing all ingredients in descending order of predominance by weight, and a “Contains” statement identifying any major food allergens present. The allergen declaration must use the common name for each allergen (e.g., “milk” rather than “casein”) and be placed immediately after or adjacent to the ingredient list.

For commercial operations handling multiple allergen-containing ingredients, understanding the relationship between product label allergen declarations and kitchen allergen warning systems ensures consistency from manufacturing through foodservice. The label is the final communication to the consumer, and any discrepancy between the label declaration and the actual formulation creates serious liability exposure.

Common Compliance Mistakes That Trigger FDA Action

FDA warning letters related to food labeling frequently cite the same set of errors: unauthorized nutrient content claims (“low fat” without meeting the regulatory definition), missing allergen declarations, incorrect serving size calculations, outdated Nutrition Facts formats, and insufficient label contrast or font size. Each of these mistakes is preventable with proper label production planning.

Working with a print partner who maintains FDA nutrition label templates and understands current requirements catches these errors at the proof stage rather than after thousands of labels have been printed and applied. The cost of a label reprint is trivial compared to a product hold or recall triggered by a labeling compliance failure. For brands committed to eco-friendly label printing, getting compliance right the first time also avoids the waste of discarding non-compliant label stock.

Get your nutrition labels right the first time. Work with a custom label printing partner who knows FDA requirements inside and out.
